HUMANITIES IN NATURE
NATURE IN HUMANITIES
entitled:
Slavonic Tree Stand
Poznań
10-11 October 2019
Slavonic Tree Stand is the Second International Conference from the cycle “Humanities in Nature – Nature in Humanities” which aims to look interdisciplinary through diachronic and synchronic prism at animate nature, and inanimate one as well in prospect. The subject of the cycle allows to take natural aspects into philological, cultural, folkloric, historical and anthropological considerations. In the cycle of meetings, as humanists, we enter a research territory which is explored traditionally by biologists. That is why we invite biologists, geographer, geologists, physicists to cooperate, if they want to emphasise a humanist element in their research.
During the second meeting a humanistic reflection covers the subject of trees, i.e. plants which do not constitute a separate unit in natural taxonomy, but they stand out in the plant kingdom because of their structure, size and longevity. People have been fascinated by trees which were considered as gods and believed to have supernatural power in the past. Moreover, big concentrations of trees, i.e. forests inspired people with a feeling of fear, but they gave feeding, shelter and wood, a fact which helped to survive hard historical or climatic periods. Nowadays trees and forests are present in linguistic and cultural awareness of the humanity. Furthermore, trees function often as monuments of nature, valued because of their longevity and importance for a certain community. Wood became a material which contributed to development of culture, for example as a building material and a main component of paper from cellulose produced in large-scale from the 19th century, a fact which caused that storing, transferring and production of large amount of information resulted in a scientific, economic and cultural progress in the 20th century. Moreover, information became more accessible for an ordinary inhabitant of the Earth.
The Slavs were connected with nature in a special way in the space of ages, therefore the presence of motifs linked to trees and forest is strongly emphasized in languages, literatures and cultures of the Slavonic nations. The meeting, proposed by Department of South Slavonic Languages and Institute of Slavonic Philology, will be devoted to the quest of forest and tree plots or motifs present in the Slavonic languages, literatures and cultures.
We invite representatives of humanities or natural science to participate in our conference debates and to present their research linked to the title of our conference “Slavonic tree stand”. We understand this title in two ways. On the one hand, as a term originated from forestry research which is concentrated on a mutual impact of trees in a certain area (in a metaphoric interpretation: influence of trees on language, literature and culture of the Slavonic nations). On the other hand, the term relates to the way in which a human being has been perceived trees in a time space.
In the framework of the conference we propose the following subjects:
Trees as a literary motif in the Slavonic literatures;
Tree symbols in the Slavonic cultural area;
Trees in fine arts of the Slavonic nations;
Trees in Slavonic folklore;
Trees in the Slavonic languages;
Trees in history of the Slavdom;
The role of trees and wood in development of the Slavonic nations;
Trees in modern and historical awareness of the Slavonic communities;
Tree as a monument of nature in the Slavonic countries.
We offer for conference participants a trip to Kórnik (covered by the conference fee), where they will visit the castle and arboretum of the Institute of Dendrology (Polish Academy of Sciences).
The conference participants cover the expenses of their travel and accommodation. We will help to find an appropriate accommodation.
